I'd go e39 530d touring, or as my current winter steed, an e46 330d touring, however I would go back to a Volvo 850 or v70, I had both as an R, very good and comfortable cars, acres of load space to.

E39 was the best car BMW ever made. Going up in value. Find a nice one in individual spec, or just a standard M-sport and you will never look back.

I don’t want a diesel, don’t do the mileage but the e39 tourings are few and far betweeen, even more so in descent condition at this budget. I have found a lovely 330i with impeccable mot history but it’s in south London and i’m Stuck on call all this week so can’t get to view it. Have to hope it doesn’t get sold in the meantime.
Doesn’t get much better than this!

Thanks for those, I had ruled that 530 out due to oil leak in advisories, could be nothing could be ominous. I think I have checked out just about everything on the market within reasonable distance to me now..
Half the fun is the hunt though!

True but beware the tin worm. The standard cosmetic stuff - rear bootlid, and arches - is easy enough to deal with. The floorpan and sills are another matter and even well polished examples can be hiding a lot of trouble which will need to be dealt with at some point

I had an E46 330d Touring for this kind of stuff...regretted selling it a little but this year's winter warrior is an E46 330ci. Like it a lot for the smaller roads.

Either a 330i Touring or one of the E39s mentioned would be a great steed!

As a quick update, I put a deposit on a 2006 3.0 Subaru Outback yesterday. They seemed to tick all the boxes really for what we need. Very smooth engine and quick enough as a third car.

Lol, I don’t foresee us doing more than a few k a year in it to be honest so MPG was never a consideration. I just wanted a reliable estate which had a bit of poke in it and a few creature comforts. They average about 25mpg so about the same as the other 2 cars in the household.
