You may recall that I had my gearbox refurbished recently but was struggling with an occasional vibration that was somewhat worrying.

The good news is that, having finally got the car back up on a ramp, we found that the cross-brace just behind the cats had been fitted the wrong way round, causing one of the cats to touch the brace under heavy load - hence the vibration.

This is the brace that has a concave long edge, specifically designed to clear the cats.

A quick removal and refit and I am now an extremely happy chap Very Happy

Good for you!

I made the same mistake when I changed the exhaust mounting rubbers... Shocked

Interestingly, there are two braces just behind the cats - the one further back is rectangular in shape and provides the mount for the exhaust rubbers.

The one I am talking about sits between that one and the cats and appears to serve no obvious purpose but to bridge across the tunnel, as nothing else is attached to it.

However, given its location, I think it exists to protect the sensors but isn't shown as a standard BMW part when I search on realoem. That suggests that it is an ALPINA part but it doesn't appear in their parts catalogue either!

Any thoughts?
