Be careful what you wish for

Post by Charles » Wed May 08, 2013 11:39 am

Only this morning I was thinking about how I might convince my insurers that a replacement windscreen is needed. After six years of numerous little chips and general sandblasting of the screen, in low sun it is quite difficult to see what is ahead of me. However, the screen still passes the MOT - albeit with a couple of advisories.

A few minutes later as I trundled down the M4 to school and there is a loud bang as something hits the screen. Nothing immediately obvious in my line of sight and then a crack starts to spread from top right hand corner horizontally across the screen about 3 inches down from the top. On closer inspection, something has hit the screen right on the outer edge where it is structurally weakest and caused a crack to start rather than being just a chip.

Looks like a replacement windscreen is about due

Charles

Just make sure you contact the company doing the screen to ensure you get the right one.

By that I mean that if youve got a screen with tint at the top which acts a a fliter/sun visor make sure you get the same fitted (if they can get hold of one o fcourse).

But...... Is it an Alpina part?

I feel your pain, mine is being replaced on Friday, crack has spread right across the middle of the screen from the edge of the passenger side to the centre of the screen. Much further and it'll be right in my line of sight.

Auto windscreens weren't *terrible* on the phone but let's see what they actually turn up with..... A new one on me was "Is it acoustic glass?" - apparently diesels are often fitted with sound absorbing glass these days.

Maybe that's why people say diesels are so quiet these days until you hear one from the outside or with windows down

I'd hate to hear mine without the sound-absorbing glass that's for sure, noisy, gruff, rattly little lump

Roll on September! New house and a much shorter commute means I might even get a petrol car next.... :D
