Comparison Alpina D3BT against Mercedes C63 AMG

Post by Bri-E » Wed Nov 27, 2013 2:45 pm

This weeks Autocar 27 November 2013 has an excellent comparison between D3BT and Mercedes AMG ( I think 570 ?) makes very good reading.
Difficult choice. D3 two to three times more economical plus a lot cheaper etc. :)

The comparison is the ALPINA D3 BT and the C63 AMG 507 Edition, which is 507 ps or 500 BHP.

Even though Steve Sutcliffe loves the AMG engine, he makes the ALPINA the winner. "Sweeter to travel in, either driver or passenger". The D3 is as quick as the C63 and better at over-taking.

ALPINA gets 5 stars, and the C63 AMG gets 4.5 stars.

On their test, the AMG got 16.6 mpg average and the D3 got 46.2 mpg.

The other stats are the officially quoted ones, although top speed is interesting. C63 AMG is 174 mph and D3 BT is 173 mph, despite giving away 150 bhp?!?

I'm gobsmacked  I've waited a long time to see what I can replace the B10 with but I think I now know 8)

Many people reckon that the B10 is the best car ALPINA have ever made. Certainly Patrick Fuller (who was editor of Autocar when the B10 came out) said that the recent long term test D5 was the second best car he had driven, the first was the B10. One main criticism of the D5 was that it is a big, heavy car.

I think the D3 BT is going to be a worthy replacement for your B10.

WOW Praise indeed, the new D3 BT seems to tick all the boxes. I think I am going to be as green as my car when one pulls into my local car park.

No. I meant the F30 D3 BT. It is shorter and 300kg lighter than the D5. I appreciate the e34 D3 is much lighter still, but lacks the power to really compete in this sector of the market.

Completely agree - naturally aspirated, large capacity V8 engines, especially the AMG ones, are the best sounding.
