I have always replaced tyres with premium brands but the last two cars I have bought have surprised me with their tyre choice. The Focus ST had Falken 452's fitted and they were superb right up to the wear indicators. much less road noise than the Conti Sport 3's I replaced them with even after 3000miles so wished I had bought Falken.
The D3 came with Avon ZZ3's fitted. I wasnt sure when I first saw them but again I was surprised. They are very quiet and were fantastic in the snow last winter v's Conti's which are shocking due to the tread design. They grip well in the wet and dry also. I would seriously consider buying them again. So far I have covered 16000 and there is around 3mm remaining.

The B3BT had it's first MOT last week. It passed with an advisory that the rear PS2s were down to 3mm.
It has now covered 12700 miles so they are not going to last as long as I thought
At 2.5k miles/mm they should be down to circa 2mm at about 14k miles, so similar results to Charles on PS2s with the E46 Touring.

Tyre (F): Michelin PS2, just replaced with 33000 miles covered.
Tyre (R): Michelin PS2, still going strong with 12000 miles.
Got the fronts (225/50R18) for £320 fitted from BlackCircles.com and using a random discount code I found through google - pretty happy with that!

Went out to the garage this morning to find my offside front tyre as flat as the proverbial pancake
after a bit of choice language and a call to work saying I 'might' be a bit late I proceeded to change the wheel,
I found that a 1.5" sliver of cut off thick sheet metal had pierced it right on the shoulder, so no way was a repair allowed there,
which considering that the tyres were nearing the renewal stage anyway wasn't as annoying as it certainly could have been!
ATS quoted me £225 for a Michelin, £175 for a Dunlop (both in stock) and they could get the Falken FK452 next day for £139 ( size 235/40 ZR 18 )
so considering I was intending to fit the Falkens anyway, to match the ones already on the rear, I bit the bullet and told them to order me two,
also judging by the wear on the inner third of the tyre compared to the outer section I think a four wheel alignment is in order to protect my investment........

About 30% is motorway/dual carrigeway with another 40% on A roads, tbh i've never had it 4 wheel aligned so its high time it was checked out.Araf wrote:Inside of the tyres could just be worn because of the camber on the geometry. Do you do a lot of motorway miles?

last time i checked Camskills (a few months ago) the price was about £105 which made the £139 fitted price seem not too bad,
but that special offer price......
thanks for completing my week Mick
EDIT: just spotted that the size you linked to is not quite right, the front's on the B10 are 235/40 18 so the offer price is £99.95 so i'm not quite as suicidal now

I just had a puncture on one of the rears which is not repairable so I want to replace the pair of them as they are at about 3-4mm anyway.
How long have you had the Falkens on the rear and what is your opinion of them? I guess it must be pretty good if you have now put a pair on the front. Have you noticed any tramlining which I have read about on some reviews.
I will also need a new pair on the front soon so with the low mileage I do in my B10 they should give me a few years worth of rubber at a reasonable cost.
TIA,
Jim

No noticeable tramlining Jim, in fact the Falkens are designed with a slightly softer sidewall specifically to prevent tramlining,Alpina Jim wrote:Hi Steve,Ikule wrote: ATS quoted me £225 for a Michelin, £175 for a Dunlop (both in stock) and they could get the Falken FK452 next day for £139 ( size 235/40 ZR 18 )

however now i have them on the front i must admit to the turn-in not quite being as pin sharp as it was with the Michelin PS2's that were on there before,
having said that i've not put a lot of miles on them yet so full height tread blocks and not fully scrubbed in won't be helping, maybe a couple of PSI extra in wouldn't hurt either.

Thanks for the info Steve. Approx £900 for new Michelins at the moment plus some marks on the wheels I want corrected (not sure thay need a full refurb) would take it well over £1k so I am trying to reduce the cost a bit without sacrificing safety / performance although some people will no doubt say you get what you pay for.Ikule wrote:No noticeable tramlining Jim, in fact the Falkens are designed with a slightly softer sidewall specifically to prevent tramlining,Alpina Jim wrote:Hi Steve,Ikule wrote: ATS quoted me £225 for a Michelin, £175 for a Dunlop (both in stock) and they could get the Falken FK452 next day for £139 ( size 235/40 ZR 18 )

Performance of the rear Falkens is spot on, they are more forgiving than the Michelins when they do lose traction,
i found the Michelins would judder along with the traction control light whereas with the Falkens it is smooth as silk, all you notice is the traction control light flickering which makes for a better driving experience imo,
grip wise i reckon they are virtually on a par with the Michelins.
