Road Tax help please
Road Tax help please
hi Guys
i know that you have probably been all through this already but i am so confused. i have had my D3 MT for 6 months and i got the DVLA tax renewal through it said that 12 months tax was £215.
i have checked through the internet and Parkers are saying as of April 2011 it should be £165.00. i have just purchased 6 mths tax as it runs out end of July and just wondered if there was anything i could do for the next time.
again i am sorry for asking this.....

D3 BiTurbo number 50
D3 number 351....gone but not forgotten

The situation, I believe, is as follows:
The D3 MT is classified as a PLG and so attracts an annual tax of £215 - despite having a CO2 emissions figure that would attract a lower amount.
Meanwhile, the D3 BT is classified according to the CO2 figures and so is taxed accordingly.
This disparity is down to the fact that until recently ALL ALPINAs were classified as PLG due to low volumes of manufacturer. In recent times, DVLA has started to accept CO2 related taxing due to the registration of certificates of conformity by Sytners - the UK concessionnaire.
There are a few cases where D3 MT owners have been able to get their cars reclassified with the DVLA but it is unclear whether this route is still available as there have been reports of reclassified MT cars being re-reclassified back to PLG by DVLA.
In simple terms, unless you work really hard AND find someone at DVLA who hasn't read the latest memo then you are stuck with PLG tax rates.

Araf be quiet please you dont know who looks at this siteAraf wrote:You'll notice that owners of B5s are keeping quiet on this, as they get away with £215 rather than £430.
Just pay the £215, and take one for the team.
No Alpina just now sold the Silver B5 Touring and bought Two X3 3.5D

I think it's a very good summarization of the situation.

Just thought the following would provide even greater clarification for all concerned.
The change point between PLG block classification and CO2 emission classification for ALPINA cars was in 2008. As such, the following cars carry a Certificate of Conformity that means they are classified according to CO2:
D3 BiTurbo (E9x)
B3S BiTurbo (E9x)
B5 BiTurbo (F10)
Otherwise, all other (earlier) cars are classified as PLG
I fully accept that it is quite a minefield and it isn't helped by the DVLA failing to provide a consistent approach for D3 MT cars. Equally, I can understand that some D3 MT owners might want to enjoy cheaper road tax because they are driving "cleaner" cars, but this isn't possible unless a CoC is available and this (generally) is not the case.
Finally, I've decided to make this thread a "sticky" so that it always appears at the top of the page so that we can simply refer new owners to the right place quickly and without fuss.

Hi,
Just had my car tax renewal through for my D3 MT and it is £165.
I have owned this car from new and it has never been classed as plg, but based on CO2, 156gm/km.
As regards insurance, renewal based on 6000 miles, myself and spouse to drive but both now retired figures vary tremendously
Carole Nash £560, Footman James £600, renewal with IAM Surety £310. this shows the benefit of passing the Institute of Advanced Motorists test.

PLG means Private Light Goods, which means there are only 2 rates for:Boxster convert wrote: What does PLG mean and is mine taxed according to CO2 emissions? If so, does anyone know what the CO2 emissions are for my car?
Cars registered before 1 March 2001 (based on engine size)
Private/light goods (TC11)
Except for Alpina's, as they are a very low volume car maker and do not have to go adhere to CO2 figures for tax purposes.
Under 1549cc.
12 months rate £130.00
6 months rate £ 71.50
Over 1549 cc
12 months rate £215.00
6 months rate £118.25
I think the C02 figure for my B3BT was 259, my current B3SBT is 224.

Thanks so much. That is a great help. My 3.2S Boxster was also £215 as it was registered in Jan 2001.
So Alpina's fall into this group because they are a v low volume company, even though my car is an April 2008 model?
Thanks for the CO2 figures. Are you going up to Nottingham on 13th?

Yes, as the DVLA had no CO2 figures to work on, all Alpina's were classed as PLG, I believe Alpina quote a CO2 figure now but as my B3SBT is under 225 it goes into band K which is £260.Boxster convert wrote:

Hope to go on the 13th all depends on the weather, don't fancy a nearly 400 mile round trip if it's tipping down
