Alpina B10 V8 in Dubai

Post by Napalm » Mon Jul 30, 2012 9:30 am

Hi folks,

So I bought this B10 a couple of months ago. It's my first big car, after only having driven hire cars out here before so it's a bit of an upgrade to say the least. It wasn't in the best condition when I got it. Both sills were damaged, peeling rear bumper, scruffy front bumper and bonnet. Previous owner claimed he'd put all the money into mechanical things but even then there was still work to do. Hedgehog failed within a couple of weeks, remote key stopped working around then too, lower arm bushes needed replaced, control arm was broken, tyres were sh*t. Also the seats needed tlc as the desert heat had dried them out.

So after various garage visits, new Michelins on it, a lucky deal on panel repair and respray for the affected panels and some tlc from myself, it's where you see it now.

There's still various things to do but the cars now at a stage where I'm not constantly thinking about whats wrong with it  I'm from Scotland and I'm back there in September so might order some bits if anyone can turn up cheap sources for the things I still need.

Things still to do (maybe) :

Need a replacement engine badge, the 4.6 badge, any ideas where I can source one?

Stripes are worn and faded, might get them re-done to it's former glory.

The facia area around the gear stick is loose, one of the mounts is broken inside, not sure how big a job this is to replace/fix. Suspect more hassle than it's worth.

On the back of the front seats, the magazine holders are broken on both seats so the trays flop back into peoples knees. Have a rather unelegant fix of clips just now, any other ideas or fixes in mind?

Missing the trim strip on the rear doors between the two windows, on both, oddly enough.

Need new caps for the wheels. I have the rear ones but they seem very loose, which I don't think is right?

Fancy a new gear knob as the current one is worn. Steering wheel is worn too but that will be £££ I guess.

Inside of the headlights are oxidized so need them taken apart and cleaned.

That's about it. The car seems solid, only thing after I've gained more experience from driving and the knowledge of the forum is the gearbox has a bit of a whine up to 2000 revs and then it goes, after 2nd it's not even really there. Take it there's not much I can do about that, maybe an oil change would help?

Here's some pics after all that babbling anyway.

Having just had to replace similar on my B3S, I found that the badge is part of a replacement engine cover - I couldn't purchase the badge on its own.

About £60 for a new cover via Sytner (for a straight six) so it might be a bit different for a V8 cover, but this should give you a ballpark.

Expensive for a badge but, like you, I hated looking into the engine bay and seeing a hole where it should have read "3.4"

On the attached link you can see what the current price. If the emblem in general has to offer.

Bet the cooling system likes the heat! How many owners has it been through, a lot or are you the next after the original. Clearly still a few bits that need doing to get it mint but its far more important that the mechanicals are right before the cosmetics, which as you've already said you've poured some money into so you know what your doing :)

Welcome to the B10 club - after reading your post I was expecting something that looked ready for the breakers yard - it looks very presentable.

The wheel centers will make a difference but keep up the good work.

Those comfort seats look awesome. No surprise that they aren't heated though!

Interesting that the rear spoiler has not got the third brake light.
I wonder if that was a delete option for the middle east market :think
