B10 3.2 or 3.3 tie rods

Post by b10brian » Tue Feb 02, 2010 11:27 pm

Hi

I think I am needing some tie rods or bushes repaired on my front end. The car has now done over 130K and is making a clonking sound when reversing out of my drive on full lock each morning. I noticed on some forums there are upper and lower tie rods and might be worth doing all together (then pay for one alignment check) but that was on a 540(v8 ) so may be slightly different set up.

Any one been through repairs front end advise gratefully received :)

Slightly left field suggestion but how worn are your front tyres?

I ask because whenever my front tyres are close to replacement I notice a clonking sound on full lock when reversing out of a parking space.

This has happened every set of tyres since the car was new.

Not sure what is causing it, NOG have checked it once or twice and found nothing - the only common factor is worn tyres each time.

I have had the rear most Tension bars replaced on mine (which is number 11 in the diagram), i was informed the bush which was breaking up was not a seperate item so the whole arm had to replaced,
price was £125.11 + vat each, i had to have both done as both sides were on the way out,
the arm number 4 in the diagram has a separate bush and the previous owner had already replaced this with a polyurethane version,
if its not the anti-roll bar drop links clonking my guess would be the bush on the front most arm has worn and is kicking it over on full lock to hit the subframe bracket,
hope this helps you Brian, let us know how you get on.

Both thanks very muchfor the replies. I think the tyres are ok so likely bushes. I had all the back bushes renewed in 09 so I think its the fronts turn.

I am thinking of going to Birds (not been before but they are quite convenient and not too costly, compared to a dealer)

Its great to have this diagram when you talk to someone fixing your car though.

I think I am going to name my car Bill :)
