Help D5 with a Cracked Spring!

Post by The Hybrid » Tue Aug 15, 2023 3:34 pm

Hi All, hope someone can help or point me in the right direction.

My car D5 (f10) has a cracked coil spring on the NSR. I've contacted a BMW specialist in Derby (G-Tech Motorworks) and they have said its going to take 5-6 weeks to order it from Sytner.

Does anyone know if this is an Alpina specific part or not?

I imagine it is but I wanted to double check as I wanted it sorting as soon as possible with it being my daily driver, so if I can get one from a 530/535D, it might be quicker and easier.

Any help is highly appreciated.

Yes, Alpina specific and made by Eibach to Alpina spec i believe.
The fronts on an F11 D5 touring are Eibach so would assume the rears on a saloon to be also.

There are 3 options just to confuse matters, you might be able to make out the part fitted to yours on the existing spring, or email Alpina with model and chassis number etc to find out.

One of the other F11 D5 owners on here had to wait about 6 weeks for a pair of fronts IIRC, so that lead time quoted is likely correct.

I dont see why any F10 rear springs wouldnt fit as a stop gap but you'll want the proper ones for the optimum Alpina ride and handling, and don't forget any interim measure would likely be a slightly different ride height and may have an effect on wheel alignment.

Page from the parts catalogue: (you'll find the whole catalogue as a sticky in the Car Advice/Information section.

Many thanks Marc76. I thought it might be the case, I've asked them to go ahead and order it.

No problem, i have actually toyed with the idea of ordering a couple for mine just in case, so i dont have to suffer the lead time!

Hope you get sorted quicker than expected...

Having just had the same issue, the parts are Alpina specific.
Mine took 5 weeks to come.
You need to supply both chassis numbers, the 3 options in the parts diagram are not the current numbers, neither was the number which Alpina gave me.

My numbers are, 6 797 779, maybe the BMW number?
33 53 644e is the Alpina number, both sides the same with Eibach 30/10 also printed on

Hope this helps

When I ordered it they asked for me both chassis numbers, I didn't have the original/crossed out one as the missus had taken it out. So I had to wait for her to get back.

Thanks for your help though.

Was 6 weeks (or there abouts) for rear springs for my F31 D3. Again, multiple options so had to have Alpina advise which one specifially, then ordered through local BMW dealer.

I had to wait 8 weeks for a pair of front springs for my F11 D5. I was initially told 3 to 4 weeks. After 7 weeks I contacted Alpina dealers worldwide trying to track down a pair of springs. Frank from FMW Tuning in Germany emailed straight back to say he had called Alpina and confirmed that parts were in stock in Buchloe. The price was the same as UK. Sytner eventually sourced the parts so I didn’t go with FMW Tuning, but I would definitely recommend trying them if you are getting desperate.

Thanks Paul. They are on order now and hopefully being fitted in October.

Hi all,

Hope you don't mind me asking but how much were the D5 springs in the end?

Currently my D5 is out of action after the rear differential decided to destroy itself but with 110,000 miles I imagine it won't be long before I'm trying to source some springs too.

More bad news. Just been for it's MOT and my D5 needs a new NSR shock absorber? Anyone know the part number?

I've had a look at the sticky but can't find a parts catalogue for the F10-D5.

And some new PS4s which have shot up in price as well.

I bought a new pair 2 years ago for £465 fitted. Now cheapest place I can find is £580 fitted.

Sorry Thom, I didn't notice this post.

It cost £387 fitted back in Sept last year. It took about 6 weeks for parts to arrive as well.

Using my Google Fu skills, I manage to find a catalogue.

But I noticed that there isn't any part for the NSR Shock Absorber? Are the same as the front ones or am I missing something?

The (mildly) good news is I’m 99% sure the dampers are standard BMW VDC versions, so supply shouldn’t be an issue.

Good luck!

Thank you. I was hoping that someone could confirm this for me seeing as they aren't in the parts catalogue.

Knowing this has put a smile on my face as I thought I might be without my car while I waited for the part.
