We are back... BUT...

Post by neil » Sat May 04, 2019 5:43 pm

Hi all

As you have no doubt realised we've been having some issues - in fact the site was hacked again - this time the damage was far more - hence it's taken a long time to recover. Also, as you will have noticed we have lost quite a lot of activity (everything since the 22nd February) on the forum - I've tried to minimise the loss and that is some of the reason it has taken so long. The other aspect is that I have been trying to ensure it doesn't happen again - This will be an ongoing process and I will be continuing this activity.

The realities of what the hack means :

1. The site was compromised - the database was accessed and data has both stolen - this includes the data on the register itseld and also the forum / including pms. With regard the register information this may include the private information you submitted - including personal contact information as well as histories of cars.

2. The data on the site was also deleted - hence I've had to recover it - some of which was straightforward and some less so.

3. We've been down for c. 2 weeks

4. Passwords are not stored in plain text - however I again suggest changing yours + also following the general recommendation of never using the same password for more than one site - I recommend password management tools like lastpass to make having lots of passwords manageable.

Once again I appreaciate everyone's patience and the offers of support - Let's hope we don't get affected further - if you have experience in web security I always appreciate people's advice + the opportunity to discuss the steps we have taken and ones we might be able to implement further.

Finally please let me know if you notice any issues that I may have missed.

Thanks in advance

A huge well done for recovering the Forum.

As Members is it essential we all change our passwords in order to protect the forum?

Is there any evidence of how the site was hacked, i.e. Through a members account?

Are there any other measures that can or should be be undertaken by forum members to assist in ongoing site security?

Huge thanks for recovering the forum; I had feared it was going the way of BMWLand and gone forever....
