Alpina M62B48 engine differences between other M62 engines
I just acquired a non running Alpina Z8 that is said to need a new engine. I am assuming worst case scenario in this situation because it does not have any coolant in the reservoir. I am wanting to get the car running again, but I know that the block is not sleeved and is instead coated with alusil-severely limiting my options on saving the block. My question is, what are the differences between the alpina motor and the other m62 engines? Thanks!
Edited:not a B10 V8S sorry about the mix up. I had my uncle make the post for me and he must have mixed up the V8S and the z8 due to us having a conversation about the engines being the same. Sorry!

Only 145 Saloons and 43 Tourings were produced worldwide, so finding a spare engine would be very difficult.
What chassis number is your V8S Pictures would be great
If you can get it fixed, do you intend to register it in the states.
Unfortunately I have heard stories from other owners attempting to make their Alpina US legal.
So many changes have to be made which lose the Alpina DNA.

Sorry it is a Z8 not a B10. As the BMW V8 engine has Nicasil (later Alusil) coated bores the block can not just be over-bored. A whole new block was cast for Alpina by BMW with the displacement increased to 4.6. Alpina also made other changes to the engine with new crankshaft, more aggressive Cams, hand fettled Ports, lighter compression Mahle pistons, and reprogrammed Motronic system.
The V8S uses a modified version of the B10 V8 engine, the bore is exactly the same at 93mm, but the new crankshaft has increased the stroke from 85mm to 89mm which increases the displacement to 4837 cm3.
Other changes include a reworked and improved intake system and new piston rings.
This same engine was later used in the Z8 based Roadster , and even became a BMW production engine in the X5 4.8is

The B10 V8S and Z8 Roadster engine is the single Vanos M62B48 engine.
The E53 X5 4.8iS engine is the dual Valve-tronic (a different system completely from Vanos) N62B48 engine.
Vanos has a fixed camshaft profile, the timing of which can be varied against the stroke position of the engine; ValveTronic uses variable valve lift. The N62 also has a variable length intake manifold.

The N62 of any kind including Alpina versions were NEVER fitted to any E39 or Z8.
The V8S/Z8 roadster engine is based on the single M62tu engine as is the 4.6.
The only Alpina versions of the N62 were the supercharged ones used in the B5/6/7 models.

One for each bank on the inlet side ONLY.
The N62 has Vanos units for both exhaust and inlet on both banks.
I have rebuilt, M60, M62, M62tu and N62 engines in the past.
