The exact problem is cracking of the Rear Axle Carrier Panel (RACP) more commonly known as the 'boot floor' or 'subframe' cracking.

It can effect any E46 as they all share the same panel.

LOTS of information on the web about it.
I believe that this only affected early E46 cars up to the facelift in 2002. If this is the case, then the B3S will be OK

I would also point out that we have never had a report of this happening to a B3 3.3 or B3S on this forum.
Afraid not. As Simon has said, it can effect every single E46 made from 316i to M3 CSL including every body shape as it shares the same part and I have personally seen cars as late as 2005 with cracking.

Its a poor design where the RACP is not joined to the rear chassis rails strong enough.

Hmm Thanks for sharing that BSS. I wonder if it can be extra strengthened by further reinforced welding if you do find that you are affected by this issue after buying one?? But then again it's all the faff of stripping the interior etc (unless it can be welded from underneath the car? - guesswork As I'm no mechanic)! Plus I'd suppose you wouldn't want to weld it to keep it original as it is (you know the term... never been welded lol) I guess this is hard to check when out viewing B3's.

If you search on YouTube for Redish Motorsport you will see what the issue is and the repair they perform to correct it.
It's a widespread issue and not an easy one to spot lying on the ground with a torch when viewing a car.
Not trying to scare you - just giving eyes wide open and all that.

Hi there Metrics - will check it out on YT!! Many thanks for the link, as for me - as long as there is a way or someone to fix it SHOULD there ever be an issue, then that would be fine as BSS has shared some info on this...

BSS - Thanks for sharing the links to your new venture - BM Performance! Looks awesome and reassuring to know that you look after Alpinas too 8)
Good to let everyone on here know too that there is an alternative to main dealers as I am constantly shocked at the prices they charge for not just servicing, but parts, quotes on body repairs etc...sickening at times. Least I know now that there is another option...even if it means travelling to Gatwick from the Midlands!! All the very best with BMP!!!

Thanks very much for the kind words!

We have a lot of Alpina experience as I have owned several, resorted and worked on many from my time at another well known BMW specialist.

Wow indeed...Thanks for sharing. I need to sell (or ideally trade in) my pretty decent M3 styled E36 Compact first so best get a move on, as this is not your average compact, hence I need to find a BM (classic) specialist who would consider taking it on for my convenience. I'm in talks with one specialist who is very interested on a sale or return basis, but my issue is I need to buy a replacement car before I give this one (as i'd be car-less). Any advice, recommendations welcome :) ..Thank you
