B3s E91 Tailgate Gas Struts

Post by Broch » Wed Jun 05, 2019 11:41 pm

I believe the BMW part number for these are BMW 51247127875.
Anyone ordered these before, and are they an easy replacement?

Onzie - It's a straightforward job but does need strong hands and gloves!

Do one side at a time. Use a screwdriver to lever up the spring clips around the ball joints - remove the bottom (large diameter) first, take care to because the strut will extend as it is removed - they are strong even when old/tired....

Give the ball joint a clean and then installation is simply a case of push fit the top (small diameter) onto its ball and then compress the strut until you get the bottom to fit. - again care is needed along with a dose of muscle.

FWIW - I didn't go for genuine BMW - SGS Engineering do reasonably-priced replacements which are good and seem to last well.

Hope that helps,

Mike

Thanks for the advice Ali and Mike. I'm going to order some this week I think.
I'll post back once I've done them.

Use suome wd40 to help you also is easy I did my E90 saloon took 5 minutes per side don't rush take your time. Keep a microfbre with you when you pop of the old strut clean the ball on your boot lid and lubricate it with wd40.

WD40 has no lubricating qualities whatsoever.
It is an urban myth.
It is great for unseixzing stuck things and to clean things but contains nothing in the way of lubricating materials.
You'll need a teflon based lube like GT85 with PTFE
