I took my E46 B3 3.3 for its first MOT in my ownership over the weekend. A nervous time for any car enthusiast. The car passed, but a few advisories were raised.
- 4 tyres advised. the Federal 595R tyres the car is sporting are showing signs of perishing. Makes sense as the car was stored for a period of time.
- One drop link cover split.
- The amber bulbs behind clear lenses are not amber enough.
I can resolve the two easier (and cheaper) tasks, but wanted to ask advice on the tyres please. It seems that black circles do not have the rear tyres in Michelin Pilot Super Sport variant. I have heard that PS4 is the current tyre that replaces the orignal PS2 which Alpina helped develop.
Any advice appreciated as it is a lot of cash to splash - I want to ensure that i am buying the right thing!

PS4.
In years gone by I had an E46 M3 (owned that for twelve or so years!) and the Pilot Sports were the natural tyre for the car.

The Pilot Sport 4s is the tyre that is the one I have been hearing rave reviews about, different to the Pilot Sport 4, so check which one you want.
I got a pair recently from Blackcircles when they did 10% off - worked out £125 each. Also try tyreleader.co.uk

It does appear to be a very good tyre.
Unfortunately, the PS4S is not available in 18" - only 19" and larger - so the PS4 is the only Michelin alternative.

I would welcome any information on where i can find a set of Michelin Pilot PS4 for my car. I cant find the rears anywhere and I have had three tyre dealers also return the bad news.
I have been offered the pilot super sports - but these are more expensive and the reviews are not as good as the PS4.

Thanks all.
Still no word at all on the Michelin PS4's - they are still not producing these.
I note that some of you are using the GoodYear Eagle F1 Assymetric - are these any good?

Hey Rav, i had the GoodYear Eagle F1 Assymetric on my 740D it was a fairly decent tyre relatively grippy and wore very well.
On my Alpina B3 i have recently replaced my Michelins with Continental Sport Contact 6 on the back and i am amazed at the wet grip and dry grip and the noise overall very impressive perfect for the car. They resist aquaplaning on the motorway so so well!!!!!
I am unsure about longevity as i only got them on the car a couple of weeks ago.
I think in fairness any decent mid-range and branded tyre is going to be good but it all depends on the type of driving you do.
On our E320 CDI we replaced the rear Continental tyres with Nankangs and even those have been very very impressive in the wet and dry again not sure of the longevity on those but i was impressed but not sure i would put them on a performance car. I went into that a little bit snobby thinking that they would be absolutely terrible but i must say i am genuinely impressed. I would buy Nankang again!!!
