Dash Cam phone apps

Post by nealpina » Sat Feb 16, 2019 4:13 pm

I dislike driving at the weekends, during the school holidays, and especially the Friday when term ends. On the M26 stop start traffic. An idiot rolled back into me. When he was rolling back, I was sounding the horn and flashing like crazy. Then traffic moved so he just followed it. I undertook him and was flagging him down and I could see he was reading a newspaper, I then got in-front of him and when traffic stopped, I jumped out of the car and said in a rage: “You rolled into me “. He just replied: “No I didn’t”. I then said: “Lying idiot”. I checked the car I was driving and no damage. In all the years I have been driving I have never had rage like it.

Any suggestions for Dash Cam phone apps and windscreen phone holders?

That sounds like a really annoying incident and we all get wound up from time to time, but these days you never know how dangerous or stupid the other driver might be so take it easy.

I’ve been thinking about a dashcam for some time but don’t think anything for your phone is a worthwhile substitute because you just won’t be bothered to set it up every time you drive. I’m sure some on here have good dash cams so hopefully someone will recommend one for both of us!

I have a dash cam, its still in the box at home. Never used it. It was a gift. I am torn between the benefit and the potential risk. If for example it records speed, driving habits and perhaps any incident or confrontation, I guess it depends on how one might be able to control their emotions.

I really don't think there is any real answer you have to make you own judgement, but the dash cams are fairly cheap now, so not out of reach for those who desire that feature.

Thanks Barry. I fully agree with you. Some people on the forum are aware of my hobbies and hence I shouldn’t have allowed my rage to get the better of me

I’ve a iPhone for personal use, and a midrange Android for work (Nokia 7.1) only because my previous Windows phone died a few week ago, and at the end of this year Windows phone support will stop (I hate most things built on Unix/Linux kernel apart from IOS and my TomTom).

Been testing Drivermatics for the iPhone and AutoBoy Dash Cam for Android. AutoBoy with sticky tape on the windscreen and quality is fairly good I think.

I’m however thinking about buying a dash cam over a phone app, if I do it will either be Nexbase 512 or the HD Duo.

I think those options can be switched off. If it was a genuine accident and regardless of fault the first thing I will say is are you ok therefore any confrontation will be their fault. This guy was too busy reading a newspaper to notice

Had a similar incident years ago when a Frenchman reversed into my m3 at a set of traffic lights. Centre of town, lots of people. Instead of getting a witness I started a rant at said Frenchman. He replied "who’s to say you didn’t drive into me" witnesses are all gone now. I now have a camera (very small) front and rear on the x5. Never look at them other to check the light is on. They loop record. One is connected to the HU the other rear one to my phone. Checked when they were fitted years ago that I could take the sd card out and load onto computer and read number plates and such like. Hopefully I will never need to take them out again. Cameras were under £20 each.

I have a camera in my B3. As it is older, it doesn't measure speed etc, i have it for my safety really. Cost about £10 on the Boxster forum from someone who just didnt use it. Took a bit of work to plumb it into the wiring of the car, but works a treat. Fortunately i have never had to use the data from it in anger....
