E36 B3 3.2 Touring suspension.

Post by MCB » Tue Apr 05, 2016 1:36 am

A couple of months ago we had new springs and dampers fitted all round. Done about 500 miles since. But checking the car today I noticed the rear N/S sits one and a half inches higher than the rear O/S.

Has anybody any ideas/suggestions what the cause of this may be? It certainly does not look normal.

Could it be a broken spring?

Well I have been thinking that myself. But a pair of brand new Alpina springs that have only done 500 miles! Surely not

Looks like wheel off and get under time

If your roads are anything like the 3rd World roads here in Staffordshire then a broken spring is a possibility

Yes our roads are bad as well. But we know where the holes are and drive accordingly. Plus in just 500 miles I know we have not hit any big holes.

Hopefully it will go on the ramp at the end of the week for a full inspection.

Alpina springs with Bilstein B6/B8 dampers. The car feels spot on now. Just got to get this ride height issue sorted. Getting it up on the ramp Monday.

Our indi guy has the car at the moment and will be putting it up on the ramp for inspection on Monday. He just called me and said that after measuring the difference he has come up with 3/4" and not the 1.5" that I reported. He went on to say that he has checked the mileage since he fitted the new suspension and it works out at 408 miles.

Although he is still going to check it over on Monday, he feels that we have not covered enough miles yet to allow the new set-up to settle fully.

My question is. How many miles would you say the car should cover before full settlement is achieved?

I still think he has got the measurements wrong and will be going there Monday with my tape measure :?

Would imagine settlement of the car would have happened within 100 miles
Just doing the same job on my coupe at the moment, get him to check the pads that the springs sit in because you can get various types. But shouldn't cause a vast change like you have mentioned

I think it will take longer than 100 miles to settle. We have decided to leave it for about 1k and see how it sits then. A full inspection has confirmed nothing is wrong underneath. So we are happy to wait and see. Currently she is sitting 3/4" higher on the n/s rear. That said we are more than happy with the way the car rides now.
