Car Details:
I bought this car new from Sytner BMW (Alpina concessionaires) on 24 May 2006. It was built to my own rather exacting specification, with many extra-cost Alpina, BMW and BMW Individuals options, on top of the standard B5 spec. which already includes:
19 inch Alpina alloy wheels inc. alloy spare. No runflats.
Alpina front spoiler with silver Alpina logo.
Alpina rear spoiler.
Dynamic Stability Control.
Servotronic steering.
Alarm system.
Electric glass sunroof.
Electrically folding wing mirrors that work off the seat memory (as does the steering wheel adjustment).
Electric front seats with dual driver memory.
Heated front seats (3-stage)
Park Distance Control F & R.
Rain sensor and auto headlight control.
Bi-Xenon headlamps.
Extended Auto Climate Control.
Professional Navigation System.
Head-Up display for speed, satnav, cruise control etc.
Voice Control for many functions (which I`ve never tried!).
High Gloss Shadow Line around the side windows.
Additional extras I ordered the car with:
Full Black Merino Leather with Alpina design (£4250). To explain, this option consists of two different things, each c.£2000 plus - The leather itself (black, soft, thick and supple with a pronounced pebble grain). And also the parts of the car covered with Merino and Nappa leather which are normally moulded plastic or leathercloth. These include:
Door trims and door inserts
Centre console
Front armrests
Handbrake gaiter
Gear lever gaiter
Lower part of dashboard
And additionally, parts covered with BMW Nappa leather:
Dashboard top (quite a large area, beautifully stitched)
Door tops
So the interior has a luxury feel akin to a £120,000 car and you might see a hint of this in my photos.
The other expensive factory extras I specified include:
Electric front Comfort seats. Softer than the standard Sports seats but give far better lateral support. The side bolsters can be programmed with the seat memory to grip just as firmly as you like, and when you turn off the ignition they relax their grip so you can get in and out easily. And the seats have other electric controls too numerous to mention!
Bluetooth phone preparation with cradle for Nokia 6230i phone (range of other snap-in cradles available). This system brings up your complete phone database on the iDrive display.
6 CD changer - a very neat one that lives in the glove locker.
Sun Protection Glazing (or what my children refer to as drug dealer windows).
Anthracite Headlining.
BMW Individuals Piano Black wood interior trim.
The interior is close to new, never having harboured dogs, children, smokers or, worst of all, an air freshener tree hanging from the interior mirror.
After delivery I had some additional work done:
Fitted a new BMW M5 multi-function steering wheel with gearshift paddles. A couple of features that my previous Alpinas did not have are that both manually selected ratios and automatic ratios are displayed right in front of the driver. Also if while in Auto you used a paddle to shift up or down, the system goes to Manual mode for about 8 seconds before reverting to Auto. Example: cruising in Auto 6th you wish to overtake; flip the downshift paddle to go into Manual 5th and use full throttle to release the extraordinary midrange torque of the engine. Overtaking complete, flip back to Manual 6th and after a few seconds you will be back in Auto 6th. This avoids unnecessary shifts down to 4th or even 3rd which the eager transmission may otherwise give you.
I found the suspension a little on the bouncy side, most unusual for an Alpina and the response to gentle steering input a trifle listless. And Autocar have mentioned a slight dissatisfaction with the B5 suspension.
After long consultations with Kevin Bird of Bird`s Garage (they also fitted the M5 wheel and paddles which is no easy task), we fitted Hartge suspension consisting of 4 new springs and 4 new shock absorbers. This was something of a gamble as they was no chance to try it out in advance, but I was impressed by Kevin telling me about the Hartge development engineer who is a suspension man to the core and really understands the ride/handling compromise.
This was a great success. At a guess, the spring rates are perhaps 10 percent stiffer at front and 5 percent at rear, but the dampers now control the car far better without ever becoming jerky. The net result is that the car rides slightly better and in a far more controlled way, every hint of bouncing has disappeared, steering response is far better because the car takes up its roll angle quickly and firmly - and without overshoot.
And measuring the ride height before and after, the Hartge kit lowers the car almost exactly 15mm each end - yet on uneven roads with 4-up and luggage one is never once aware of the bump stops coming into play.
So with the M5 steering wheel and paddles and the Hartge suspension I spent many more thousands of pounds, a total of about £10,850, but we did transform this car to something quite special - and unique - among Alpinas.
A Tracker Monitor is fitted, and I will transfer it to the new owner.
The engine is the standard scroll-supercharged 4.4 litre V8 offering a minimum of 500 German horsepower or marginally less when translated into English. The filler cap label says the car may be run on 95 octane but I have always used Shell Optimax or V-Power which is about 98 octane RON. Fuel consumption is good compared with my previous 5-Series Alpinas, currently running in the region of 26.1 to 26.4 mpg.
The car has the balance of the full BMW 3-year warranty, running until May 2009. In addition to the PDI done by Alpina in Germany it has been serviced twice at Sytner and of course the service book stamped.
The car has been kept immaculately clean inside and out. No smokers, no cats, no dogs, no muddy boots. As one of our stable of 6 cars, only used for long and worthwhile journeys.

Car Details:
Sytner ex-demo high spec B5 but with an interesting history already. A pre-facelift model allegedly sent back to Alpina for remedial work and returned with later spec details such as B5S 20" wheels. Bought with just 1250 miles on the clock.
Specification includes high gloss shadowline, piano black veneer, Amethyst leather with matching stitching, headlining and co-ordinated mats, sun protection glass, full comfort seats plus all the usual electronic technology: Phone/TV/Voice/Tracker.
It'll be a pig to keep clean, but when it is, it looks stunning with a subtle mean look and the wheels giving it a butch/squatter appearance.
