Car Details:
If you're looking for a super-quick 5-Series, and it has to be an auto, then it has to be a B10 V8 with Alpina's excellent Switchtronic mods to the standard 5-speed BMW/ZF gearbox. This gives the option of changing manually using the shift buttons on the steering wheel...and the shifts are super-responsive thanks to Alpina's clever re-working of the electronics. Performance is in the premier league chasing hard on the heels of the V8 M5 with 0-60mph in 5.7(5.3), 0-100mph in 13.8(12.7) and the standing quarter in 14.2/102mph(14.1/106mph).
As you would expect of a car costing in excess of £63,000, this 1997 model is exceptionally well equipped and still retains all its Alpina upgrades to the engine suspension, brakes and exhaust. Alpina's distinctive roof-mounted build plaque identifies this as number 204 of an exclusive breed which on its 1997 UK launch was described by Autocar as "the best sporting saloon on sale" awarding it a top 5-star rating.
This left-hand-drive example with just 77,860 miles was first registered October 1997 in Germany where it was enjoyed by just two owners before coming to the UK in 2002 with 55,000km (34,375 miles) and a full BMW service history. The car has since had a further two owners both of whom have relied on Munich Legends to ensure its continued well-being. The service book tells the following story: running-in inspection (1,030km), oil service (18,449km), Inspection 1 (27,245km), oil service (38,291km), oil service (54,790km) and an Inspection 11 (68,772km) all of which were undertaken by BMW dealers. We then carried out an oil service at 83,222km and replaced the cylinder head gaskets at 96,398km. The last service, an Inspection 11, was carried out last year at 113,496km.
The previous owner who purchased the car in April 2003 insisted that no expense be spared in maintaining it to the highest possible standard. Hence our pre-sale inspection revealed only a few minor issues all of which will be dealt with before the car leaves us. These include carrying out an oil safety service, replacing the damaged n/s/r tyre, fitting a new front undertray, refurbishing all four wheels and tracking down a couple of irritating rattles. We've also had to replace the instrument display panel because some of the digits had gone 'chinese'. The interior trim is in good shape with the leather needing little more than a good clean and a liberal application of hide food. However, the paintwork has picked up a few scuffs and dings over the years but nothing too unsightly.
Freshly serviced, fully prepared and with a 12-month MOT, this mighty impressive 'Five' will be ready to cosset and excite in equal measure...pretty good value, too.
